UCI GRAN FONDO WORLD SERIES (GFWS)

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Gran Fondo World Series is a series of UCI-sanctioned races held all over the world. Tour de Bintan is one of the only 2 races in Asia and 21 in the world where participants can obtain their ticket for the official UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in different age groups. The top 25% in each age group qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, where the champions are awarded with the coveted rainbow jersey.

The UCI Gran Fondo World Championship will crown the new UCI World Champions in Road racing and Time-trial in Varese, Lombardia (Italy) on 1-2 September 2018.

Tour de Bintan UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifier races:

  • Friday, 23 March – Individual Time Trial 17KM
  • Saturday, 24 March – Gran Fondo Classic 144KM

How to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship:

  • The top 25% of each age category on 17km Individual Time Trial and 144km Gran Fondo Classic qualifies for the World Championship
  • The top 3 winners of an age category always qualifies regardless of the number of cyclists in the category

2018 UCI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS (Varese, Italy)

VARESE – ITALY

Varese is very well-known for cycling, having organised the UCI Road World Championships in 1939, 1951 and most recently in 2008. The region also hosts the annual 1.HC event Tre Valli Varesine.

Ganna, Chiappucci, Motta, Garzelli, Basso… the region of Varese has also produced some of cycling’s great champions!

Riders can look forward to a beautiful course between the lakes of Lugano and Lago Maggiore, with some tough climbing in between.

Qualification:

Cyclists at the Tour de Bintan can qualify for the Gran Fondo World Championships.

The Top 25% of finishers in each age group in the following events will earn a spot:

  • Friday 23 March – Individual Time Trial 17km
  • Saturday 24 March – Gran Fondo Classic 144km

Qualifiers will receive an official qualifier medal.  Age group winners will receive a UCI Gran Fondo World Series jersey.
